The Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology’s (SIOP) Military and Veterans Initiative (MVI) Task Force is a volunteer effort focused on supporting, disseminating, and informing the science and best practices for hiring, engaging, and retaining military veterans, Reserve/Guard members, service members, and their families. The initiative draws upon the unique qualifications and expertise of SIOP members and their understanding of psychological science and best practices to educate and inform civilian employers about the military community and experience of individuals with a military background working in civilian contexts.
 
This document lists the activities coordinated by the Task Force and the symposia and posters that address the military-to-civilian transition process.

Panel Discussion: Effective Advocacy Strategies for I-O Professionals
This session is designed to build the capacity of I-O professionals who are interested in engaging in advocacy through formal and informal strategies. It uses a blended format of formal presentation and expert panel discussion to provide effective advocacy strategies I-O professionals can use to promote policies, laws, change, and initiatives that align with SIOP’s mission and professional ethics.

This tutorial will aggregate findings from the research with best practices found to be effective from practitioners and summarize the resources and communication strategies that can immediately be applied to help employers improve their hiring and retention of military members and veterans.

Veteran and Military Member I-O Psychology Mentoring Program
 
As part of SIOP’s commitment to the military, veterans, and their families, the Task Force has a mentoring and information sharing program for military veterans, members of the military, and their families interested in exploring an education or career in industrial and organizational psychology. 
 
Individuals interested in learning more about the I-O field can contact program coordinator Pat Engelhardt at pengelhardt@icloud.com and they will be matched with SIOP members who can provide mentoring and guidance.
