From the President's Desk

Welcome to the 2025 American Psychological Association Annual Convention!

What a year it’s been — a year of change, challenge, and remarkable momentum. When I stepped into this role, I laid out three guiding priorities: Connection, Communication, and Cause. Little did I know how deeply those themes would shape the months ahead. Through every twist and turn, this community has shown up – with heart, grit, and purpose – for each other, for the field of psychology, and for the mission we all share.

  1. Connection

Building real, meaningful connections – ideally in person, but in any way possible – was my top priority. And wow, did we deliver. From the Summit and RSS meetings to our regional breakfasts and now, right here at APA 2025, you’ve all helped create spaces where collaboration and community can thrive. I invite you to explore everything Division 19 has to offer throughout the Convention – from our robust programming to the lively Hospitality Suite and, yes, all the social gatherings too. Come connect, engage, and be part of something bigger.

  1. Communication

My second focus was strengthening how we communicate – not just within Division 19, but with the broader psychological community and beyond. This June, our voices were featured in the APA Monitor Online article on “Building Mental Strength in the Military,” showcasing the vital work we do. In every newsletter, I’ve pushed for promoting science to push back against misinformation. So while you’re here – talk, share, engage. Let’s make sure the story of military psychology is heard – clearly, accurately, and powerfully.

  1. Cause

And finally, cause. Our Advocacy Committee has had a tough road this year – but they didn’t waver. They stayed the course, fighting for military psychologists’ recognition, promotion, and retention. Advocacy remains a pillar of our mission – supporting mental health, equity, and inclusion not just in APA, but across the systems we work in every day. Don’t miss our special session on Saturday, 12:00 to 12:45 PM in the Hospitality Suite – where we’ll dive into navigating policy changes. You’ll hear from both Division 19 and APA Advocacy leaders. It’s going to be a powerful conversation.

As I close, I want to say thank you – for your time, your passion, your service, and your belief in this work. It’s an incredible honor to serve with you and for you.

Let’s keep the energy going. Let’s keep connecting, communicating, and standing up for the causes that matter most.

Thank you — and enjoy the Convention!
